Pediatric Emergency Department

The GBMC Pediatric Emergency Department and Inpatient Unit uses a "Continuum of Care" model combining observation, urgent and inpatient care services all on the same floor for improved efficiency, and a dedicated clinical staff allows the same nurses and physicians to follow children along their path of care.  A board-certified pediatrician will be on-site around-the-clock, caring for patients up to age 17.

With at least one board-certified pediatrician on the floor 24-hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week, and 22 pediatric-trained nurses, GBMC's Pediatric Emergency Department (ED) is equipped to provide all necessary stabilizing care for children.

The Pediatric ED meets all standards and recommended criteria of the "Joint Policy Statement Guidelines for Care of Children in the Emergency Department."

The department benefits from having standing relationships with consultants in various specialties throughout the hospital, including gastrointestinal; ear, nose and throat; ophthalmology; neurology and pediatric surgery. In addition, the department's pediatricians and nurses work closely with Charles Emergency Physicians group in GBMC's main ED. For pediatric patients with significant psychiatric problems that may require inpatient care, a psychiatrist is available from 12:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. to provide evaluations.

The clinical team participates in the Pediatric Advanced Life Saving (PALS) Program, which focuses on the steps to be taken for any pediatric patient moving toward cardiopulmonary failure. The program helps to reinforce the important steps necessary to stabilize a child, as the steps differ from those taken for adults experiencing cardiopulmonary failure.

The Pediatric ED and the pediatric inpatient area form a combined unit, allowing GBMC to concentrate its resources so that each child - whether in the ED or at GBMC as an inpatient - has access to medical professionals trained in pediatric care.
