General Internal Medicine

Internists are physicians who specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses in adults from adolescence to the most senior of citizens. Internal Medicine physicians are board-certified, and the division promotes the practice of all internists associated with GBMC. Although many internists care for their own hospitalized patients, the residents, under the direct supervision of the GBMC faculty, also care for their own patients and the hospitalized patients of other community physicians. Additionally, hospitalists care for the hospitalized patients of community physicians. The Internal Medicine Residency Program, which received a five-year accreditation in 2009, provides comprehensive three-year training and places great emphasis on preventative care, chronic disease management and building relationships with patients.
