Board Recognized Specialist in Swallowing Disorders

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) who have advanced knowledge, skills and experience are recognized by the designation of BRS-S or Board Recognized Specialist in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. This certificate is akin to Board Certification that qualified physicians hold. The American Speech-Language Hearing Association, that grants basic certification to all SLPs as an entry level requirement for practice, began this program of Specialty Recognition in 1995. While BRS-S is voluntary, it is becoming the standard for identifying an SLP who is an expert in dysphagia, or swallowing disorders.

Dorothy Gold, LCSW-C, OSWCGBMC Oncology Social Worker Receives Prestigious National Recognition

BALTIMORE, Md. - March 18, 2010 - Dorothy Gold, LCSW-C, OSW-C, a 6½ year employee of Greater Baltimore Medical Center and a resident of Pikesville, has received a prestigious national honor in her field of social work. Gold, senior oncology social worker at GBMC's Milton J. Dance, Jr. Head and Neck Center, has been named Social Worker of the Year by the Association of Oncology Social Work.

"I'm humbled and proud to receive this professional recognition," Gold said. "Working with outstanding colleagues in a multidisciplinary approach certainly has allowed me to reach great individual achievements and contribute to our team's successful work with patients and their families."

The AOSW's Social Worker of the Year award recognizes a professional who in the day-to-day delivery of compassionate service is a model for the profession, and who displays integrity and commitment to oncology social work, clinical expertise in delivering patient care services, and knowledge of community resources and skills in advocating for fulfilling patient and family needs.

"Dorothy is very deserving of this award and strives to place patients' needs first and foremost each and every day," said Barbara Messing, administrative director of the Dance Center.

AOSW was created in 1984 to advance excellence in the psychosocial care of persons with cancer, their families and caregivers through networking, education, advocacy, research and resource development. Gold will receive the award at the American Oncology Social Worker Association's annual conference in May.
