Life After Bariatric Surgery

Over the past few months, you have been working toward making positive lifestyle changes to improve your overall health and prepare you for surgery. However, these changes aren't just something that will disappear immediately after surgery. In fact, successful weight loss after surgery is dependent upon each patient's continued commitment to a healthy diet and exercise routine. The truth is that the changes you are implementing prior to surgery will help make the transition to your post-surgery lifestyle smoother.

"People don't always realize that their routines and roles in life are going to be the same even after they've had surgery," explains Rebecca Myrowitz, dietitian with GBMC's Comprehensive Obesity Management Program. "Life goes on as usual after surgery, and that's why it is so important for patients to really think about how their new healthier habits will continue to fit into their everyday lives - whether while at restaurants, on vacation or attending family events. Individuals will still be 'wearing a lot of hats' but it is crucial to find a way to work in their new dietary and exercise habits so they can sustain them long term."

Simple habits, such as putting most of your meal in a to-go box to take home when dining out, can be the key to maintaining your healthy behaviors while also enjoying your social life. When times get hard or your results seem to plateau, don't give up. Focus on all of the benefits of your new lifestyle, which could range from prevention of diabetes and getting rid of sleep apnea to having more energy and improved self esteem.

Just remember, you don't have to do it alone. GBMC offers free support groups for patients who have had weight loss surgery or are in the process of doing so. The support groups offer a great opportunity for individuals to share their experiences and offer tips on how they are successfully maintaining their lifestyles and overcoming obstacles.
