The Division of Thoracic Surgery
The Division of Thoracic Surgery at GBMC offers expertise in general thoracic surgery, and also includes cutting-edge multimodality cancer treatment and minimally invasive surgical procedures.
Minimally invasive surgical techniques are used preferentially in all facets of the GBMC Thoracic Surgery Practice. Patients undergoing Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery (VATS) for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the chest or laparoscopic procedures for treatments of swallowing problems, generally experience fewer complications, less pain and scarring and a quicker recovery.
Post thoracic surgery pulmonary and physician therapy rehabilitation are also available for patients. A guided, supervised program of exercise and therapy designed specifically to facilitate rapid recovery is offered to patients.
Clinical Trial Participation
Nearly 85% of eligible patients participate in clinical trials, examining the diagnosis, treatment and surveillance of their disease. GBMC is an active clinical trial center participating in cooperative group trials (CALGB, ACOSOG, RTOG, SWOG, ECOG), as well as industry sponsored trials.
