The Gynecology Department has over 70 active and practicing physicians, many of whom also perform obstetrical services. Surgically, the Gynecology service is one of the busiest in Maryland with over 4,600 inpatient and outpatient surgical cases in FY 2009. The inpatient service has 24 beds (all single rooms) on a unit deciated to women surgical patients. Most ambulatory surgery is performed in the Women's Surgical Center (WSC) located in Physicians Pavilion West. The WSC has an operating suite of 6 rooms. Major surgery is performed in the general operating room.
The Department of Gynecology is a regional leader in laparoscopic surgery and was one of the first in Maryland to perform these surgeries. Minimally invasive surgery is available for hysterectomy, tubal ligation, endometrial ablation, and urinary incontinence procedures. Whenever possible, minimally invasive surgical techniques are used for gynecologic malignances as well. GBMC surgeons performed the first da Vinci robot-assisted gynecologic surgery (2006) at a community (non-academic) hospital in the Mid-Atlantic (MD, DC, DE and VA) region.
GBMC actively supports residency training and there are 6 residents on the Gynecology service throughout the year. Additionally there are fellows in subspecialty training in the Division of Urogynecology/Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery.
There is an ambulatory service area that offers minor procedures such as Colposcopy, LEEP. Cystoscopy, Urodynamics, and Hysteroscopy. The DEXA lunar bone density scanner is also located in this area. GBMC's training features include a laparoscopic training lab and teleconferencing for surgical procedures or conferences.
The GynecologyFaculty contribute to the literature with research papers, and presentations to national and international meetings. Faculty also contribute to book chapters upon request, mostly in the area of Female Pelvic Medicine.
