The Primary Stroke Center Team


The GBMC Stroke Team oversees care of stroke patients from the time of their arrival at the Emergency Department (ED) until discharge. ED staff provides initial patient assessment, coordinates rapid diagnostic imaging and laboratory tests and initiates treatment. Once the patient is admitted, care is provided by a multi-disciplinary team including neurologists, neurosciences nurses and specialists from disciplines such as Physical and Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Pathology, Dietary and Care Management. Stroke Team clinicians also act as a resource for staff and families caring for stroke patients and raise awareness within the community.



Michael Sellman, MD

Chief, The Center for Neurology at GBMC


Dr. Sellman has joined GBMC as chief of its Division of Neurology and the Primary Stroke Center at GBMC. Dr. Sellman graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed his internship and residency there. He was a fellow of Electromyography and Clinical Neurophysiology at Academic Hospital in Uppsala, Sweden and University of Maryland. Board-certified in Neurology and Electrodiagnostic Medicine, his interests are in both Clinical Neurophysiology and Neuromuscular disorders. Before joining GBMC, Dr. Sellman served as Chief of the Division of Neurology at Mercy Medical Center since 2002.

James H. Bernheimer, MD
James H. Bernheimer, MD
Medical Director, Primary Stroke Center at GBMC

Dr. Bernheimer recently joined GBMC's Division of Neurology and the Primary Stroke Center at GBMC. Board-certified in Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology, Dr. Bernheimer previously served as Medical Director of the Stroke Center at Mercy Medical Center. He earned his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine and completed an internship in Internal Medicine at Mercy. His residency in Neurology and fellowship in Clinical Neurophysiology were both completed at the University of Virginia Medical Center.

Arash Taavoni, DO
Arash Taavoni, DO

Dr. Taavoni has joined GBMC as a board-certified neurologist. Dr. Taavoni earned his medical degree from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. He completed his residency in neurology at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh and his fellowship in clinical neurophysiology at University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

James Wolf, MD
James Wolf, MD

Dr. Wolf received his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed a neurology residency at University of Oregon Health Sciences Center, supplemental family practice residency training at South Chicago Community Hospital, an internship at San Francisco General Hospital and additional training in psychiatry at Johns Hopkins.
