Since its founding, GBMC has been fortunate to attract dedicated, committed volunteers who work throughout the Health System, serving as support to the hospital staff and as advocates and friends of the patients. Having more than 800 active volunteers who provide more than 100,000 hours of work each year, GBMC has one of the largest and most productive volunteer service programs in the country.
When asked what makes GBMC's volunteer program so successful, the answer is quite simple. It's a winning combination of high caliber, highly motivated volunteers; diverse volunteer opportunities from direct patient and non-patient involvement to fund-raising; expedient and professional volunteer interviewing, training, and orientation processes; and the overall friendly, service-excellence culture instilled throughout the GBMC organization.
Key to our success is the range of volunteers' expertise, abilities, and skills that enable our staff more time to focus on the critical needs of the hospital. From our Lobby Escorts/Greeters at the front desk who assist new patients in their first moments in the Medical Center, to the women and men who help patients upon discharge, GBMC volunteers provide services in more than 86 areas throughout the hospital.
Whether our volunteers choose to lend their assistance in direct patient involvement, partial or non-patient contact, each volunteer's contribution brings added value to the hospital's service to its patients and their families and friends.
Additionally, unlike other volunteer programs in healthcare organizations, GBMC combines both its auxiliary/fund-raising and service volunteers, which allows all active volunteers to participate in fund-raising events. This unique partnership of collective talents and skills has resulted in producing significant amounts of capital contributions that are allocated directly to the hospital.
GBMC fund-raisers supported by our volunteers include the Auxiliary-Sponsored Sales, the hospital's semi-annual Nearly New Sale, and other special events held throughout the year. In addition, volunteers help to maximize sales in The Gift Shop, GBMC's premier gift shop that attracts both hospital visitors and other shoppers from the community who are looking to find one of a kind specialty items. We are proud to state that proceeds from these sales and events have exceeded more than $500,000 annually, which is entirely pledged to many areas throughout GBMC from the The Sandra & Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute and Gilchrist Hospice Care to Women's Health programs and the Neonatal Care Unit.
