 Neal M. Freidlander, MD, FACP
Chairman, Department of Medicine
Dr. Friedlander graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and the Harvard Law School. After practicing law, he received his medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical School. Dr. Friedlander completed his internal medicine residency at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore Maryland where he was Chief Resident. He has practiced internal medicine since 1984 and became Chairman of the Department of Medicine in March 2006. In addition to internal medicine, Dr. Friedlander is interested in issues involving patient safety and quality as well as the challenges that face physicians and society as the practice of medicine evolves.
 Paul N. Foster, MD, FACP
Program Director
Dr. Foster graduated from Yale University. Prior to entering medical school, Dr. Foster spent three years in the US Peace Corps as a high school teacher and public health worker. He graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Washington in Seattle. He was a Chief Resident at Swedish Hospital as part of his senior year of training. He comes to GBMC from Tucson, Arizona where he was Internal Medicine Unit Chief of a community health center. Clinical interests include cross-cultural medicine, medical error reduction, and general internal medicine.
 Hmu Minn, MD, FACP
Associate Program Director
Dr. Minn received his medical degree from Institute of Medicine I, Yangon, Myanmar and worked as a medical officer before coming to the United States. He completed his internal medicine training at Greater Baltimore Medical Center where he also went on to serve as chief resident. He completed his geriatric fellowship training at University of Maryland Medical Center. His interests include resident education and geriatric medicine.
 Surendra Marur, MD, MPH, FACP
Associate Program Director
Dr. Marur received his Bachelors of Science in Engineering from The University of Michigan before traveling to India to complete his medical education at the Kasturba Medical College in Manipal. He then completed his training in Internal Medicine at Wayne State University / Sinai-Grace Hospital. He joined the Internal Medicine Residency faculty at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit where he also served as their Ambulatory Clinic Director and worked as a primary care physician. He completed his Masters of Public Health from The University of Michigan during his tenure at Sinai-Grace Hospital. When he located to Maryland, Dr. Marur worked as a hospitalist at Frederick Memorial Hospital before joining the faculty at GBMC. His interests include Preventive Medicine, Medical Education, and Health Care Management and Policy.
 Suzanne Caccamese, MD, FACP
Dr. Caccamese received her undergraduate degree from Washington and Jefferson College and her medical degree from Penn State University. She completed her Internal Medicine internship and residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she went on to serve as chief resident. She has completed the Johns Hopkins University Faculty Development Programs in Teaching Skills and Curriculum Development. Prior to joining the GBMC faculty, Dr. Caccamese served as faculty at Baltimore's Good Samaritan Hospital and at University of Pittsburgh in the Division of General Internal Medicine. She serves as the director of medical student rotations, director of recruitment, and as the Medical Advisor for the Department of Medicine Physician Performance and Quality Improvement Committee.
 Marie Chatham, MD, FCCP, DABSM
Dr. Chatham graduated from University of Maryland College of Medicine. She completed her Internal Residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and her Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Chatham recently accepted a full time position here to have more time to work with residents and as well as do other projects for GBMC. Such a project this last year was to partner with residents interested in pulmonary and critical care and construct a hospital-wide system to reduce readmissions for COPD. She also does a weekly lunch-time teaching session with the ICU team. Special areas of interest include pulmonary hypertension and asthma. She maintains professional ties with both University of Maryland and Hopkins.
 Laura A. Donegan, MD, FACP
Dr. Donegan graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Johns Hopkins University in 1989. She completed medical school and residency through the US Air Force with AOA honors. She then practiced as an academic internist with the Air Force for ten years, serving as Clerkship Director and then as Chief of the Internal Medicine Clinic at Andrews Air Force Base. Dr. Donegan joined the faculty practice in 2003. She directs operations for the faculty clinic, and has special interest in ACLS training.
 Michele R. Demusis, MD, FACP
Dr. DeMusis graduated from Yale University with a B.A. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry and from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Clinician-Educator Fellowship in General Internal Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania before joining the faculty at GBMC. Her clinical interests include women's health, preventive medicine and menopause.
 Clair Francomano, MD
Dr. Clair Francomano attended Yale College as an undergraduate and received her M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She trained in Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics at Johns Hopkins and joined the full-time Hopkins faculty in 1984. In 1994 she became Chief of the Medical Genetics Branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, where she served as Clinical Director from 1996-2001. From 2001-2005 she was Chief of the Human Genetics and Integrative Medicine Section in the Laboratory of Genetics, National Institute on Aging. She joined the GBMC faculty in 2005 as Director of Adult Genetics at the Harvey Institute of Human Genetics, and joined the GBMA practice in July 2006.
 Helen Gordon, MD, FACP
Dr. Gordon graduated from Princeton University with an A.B. in Religion and American Studies and received her M.D. from Duke University Medical School. She completed her Internal Medicine residency at Emory University and was a Senior Associate in the Division of General Medicine at Grady Memorial Hospital before joining the faculty at GBMC. In addition to general internal medicine with a tendency toward geriatrics, Dr. Gordon has been boarded in the sub-specialty of Hospice and Palliative Care since 2001, and a Fellow in the American College of Physicians since 2006. She also directs Medical Grand Rounds and serves as the Chair of the Ethics Committee.
 Eugene A. Obah, MD
Dr. Obah graduated from the University of Nigeria College of Medicine and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. He came to the United States after accepting a postdoctural research position in the Division of Molecular and Clinical Rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he spent two years researching the molecular biology of HIV infections. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and was chosen to serve as a Chief Resident in his third year. In addition to general internal medicine, Dr. Obah is interested in medical education, cardiovascular disease and clinical epidemiology.
 Mitchell L. Schwartz, MD, FCCP
Dr. Schwartz graduated from Duke University with a Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, and received his M.D. from UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School. He then spent six years of postgraduate training at the Medical College of Virginia where he completed a residency in Internal Medicine followed by a combined fellowship in Pulmonary Disease and Critical Care Medicine. Dr. Schwartz has been on staff at GBMC since 1994 and since 2002 has served as the Director of Critical Care Services. His interests include ARDS, sarcoidosis, and COPD where he is actively involved in several clinical research trials.
 Renu Thomas, MD
After having grown up in Baltimore, Dr. Thomas spent time in India where she completed medical school, graduating from Trivandrum Medical College/ University of Kerala. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at GBMC and in 2003 joined GBMC's hospitalist group which she has remained a member of since. She joined the faculty practice part time in 2011. Her interests include bettering inpatient medical care and international health.
