The service is covered by Medicare. If you have private insurance, you need to know if your insurance covers low vision occupational therapy. As a general rule, if they cover the doctors visit, they will cover the occupational therapy visit as well. To learn more, please read the questions and answers below.
1) Does Insurance cover the doctors visit?
Yes: Most insurance companies will pay for the service under a specialty visit. If your insurance requires a referral than you are responsible for obtaining this. We will do whatever we can to make this process easier and more understandable, please call for more information
2) Does Insurance cover the occupational therapy visit?
The service is covered by Medicare. If you have private insurance, you need to know if your insurance covers low vision occupational therapy. As a general rule, if they cover the doctors visit, they will cover the occupational therapy visit as well.
3) Does Insurance pay for the devices?
No. Unfortunately insurance does not cover any of the aids or non-optical aids recommended by the therapist and/or doctor. However we do have a grant available to our patients. The grant is based on financial need. You can call the office and ask them to send you a copy or you can obtain it at your first visit.
4) Do I have to see the doctor to get a magnifier?
Yes. If you require a magnifier higher than a 3X we will need you to come in first to see the doctor and then the occupational therapist. We do this because we want to be sure that you are getting the appropriate aid and the best training and education on how to use the aid(s). Our philosophy is we would like to take a more holistic approach rather than just give you a device that may not work.
5) Do I need an appointment to pick up a few low vision items like a calender and pens?
No. You can come to the Hoover store and pick up any non-optical aids during the hours of 8:30 am to 4:30 am. We have an educated staff who can aid you in purchasing the proper aids for your needs.
6) Do I really need to plan on 3 hours for the first visit?
Yes. We provide a comprehensive exam. First with Dr. Sunness and then, if warranted, with Susan Garber. We want to be sure that you receive all the services needed to feel empowered on your first visit.
7) Do I need to return after that first visit?
Sometimes. Often the occupational therapist will require at least 2-3 visits to ensure proper training and follow through has been accomplished. Those visits require 60-90 minutes. The therapist usually schedules patients every other week, as needed. If a home visit is required this may be an added visit as well. The doctor will determine if any further tests or follow-up visits are required.
8) If the doctor says I need new glasses, can I get them at Hoover?
No. We do not make glasses on our premises. We recommend that you take the prescription to your regular optical store. We can make recommendations upon request.
