Our Team - Radiation Oncology at GBMC

Our radiation oncology department is staffed with three board certified radiation oncologists. All of whom have been named "Top Doctor" in the 2008 Special Medical Report Issue of Baltimore Magazine. Collectively, our radiation oncologist have extensive experience in transperineal prostate implants, genito-urinary cancers, breast cancer, lung cancer, and head and neck cancer. We have three medical physicists, one who is broad certified, and two medical dosimetrists. Our radiation oncology nurses and radiation therapists, collectively, have more than two decades of experience. Our department works as a team to provide advanced and customized care to all our patients. This dedication shows in patient satisfaction survey results, where 97% of results indicate that patients have had a good to excellence experience.

Robert Brookland, MD FACR FACRO

Robert Brookland, M.D., a board-certified radiation oncologist, earned his medical degree at Georgetown University School of Medicine. Following his internal medicine residency, he completed his residency in radiation oncology at the University of Pennsylvania where he was an American Cancer Society Fellow and served as chief resident.

After staff appointments in the Departments of Radiation Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania and the Fox Chase Cancer Center, Dr. Brookland relocated to Baltimore where he currently chairs the Department of Radiation Oncology at GBMC.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Brookland has served as Chairman of Professional Education for the American Cancer Society and Director of Continuing Medical Education at GBMC. Also at GBMC he has been a member of the Institutional Review Board, the Medical Board, and is Vice Chair of GBMC Foundation. He has served as Principal Investigator for the RTOG (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group).

Other research interests include published papers in the areas of breast and genito-urinary cancers. He has been a guest lecturer at Towson University and has appeared on area TV stations, national cable programs including CNN, and many radio programs. Dr. Brookland has been a member of the Medical Advisory Committee for the Governor's Cancer Commission, Maryland Board of Physician Quality Assurance, and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. He served as Chairman of the Board for the American Cancer Society divisions in Maryland, Mid-Atlantic and South Atlantic and has testified in Annapolis for tobacco control legislation and mammography coverage. Dr. Brookland has been a member of the Baltimore County Medical Association Board of Governors, and chaired its Peer Review Committee.

Albert L. Blumberg, MD

Medical School:Jefferson Medical College
Residency:University of California S.F. Medical Center

Dr. Blumberg was born in Philadelphia Pennsylvania.  After graduating from Central High School, he entered the 5 year combined BS/MD program, earning his BS in 1972 from the Pennsylvania State University and his MD in 1974 from Jefferson Medical College.  After doing an Internal Medicine internship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, he did his Radiation Oncology residency in San Francisco at UCSF finishing in 1978.  He served as chief resident from 1/1/78 through 6/30/78. 

Dr. Blumberg then moved back to Philadelphia to become an assistant professor in the Department of Radiation Therapy at The University of Pennsylvania.  He moved to Baltimore in November 1981 to become the vice chairman of the newly created Department of Radiation Oncology at The Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC).

Dr. Blumberg is a diplomate of The American Board of Radiology since 1978.  He recertified in 2000.  He is a Fellow of The American College of Radiology.

Dr. Blumberg has served as president of the Baltimore County Medical Association as well as Med Chi, the Maryland State Medical Society.  He also has served as president of the Maryland Medical Breast Society and Smoke Free Maryland.  Nationally he has served on the board of The American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology (2001-2008) and has served on the board of The American College of Radiology (ACR) since 2003.

He currently serves as ACR's Chairperson of The Commission on Radiation Oncology.  He also is a delegate to the American Medical Association for the ACR.

Locally, Dr. Blumberg has served on the Board of GBMC (1994-2004) and serves on the Board of both The Maryland Radiological Society and the Medical Mutual Liability Insurance Society of Maryland.

Geoffrey Neuner, MD

Residency:University of Maryland Medical System

Dr. Neuner recently joined the Sandra & Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute at GBMC as a radiation oncologist. Dr. Neuner attended medical school and earned his medical degree from Eastern Virginia Medical School. Before being hired at GBMC, he worked as a resident at University of Maryland Medical System.
