GBMC's Uterine Fibroid Center brings together experts in diagnosis and treatment of fibroids, to provide women a complete range of options that can be tailored to each woman's specific needs. A single call connects women with GBMC physicians who specialize in treating fibroids. During the initial evaluation, physicians discuss symptoms, perform imaging, blood work, and physician examination, and discuss possible treatment options.
Fibroids are very common - 77% of women have them and 25% have symptoms that could be improved with treatment. Symptoms include:
- Heavy or prolonged menstrual periods
- Abnormal bleeding between periods
- Pelvic pain
- Frequent urination
- Low back pain
- Pain during intercourse
Uterine Fibroid Embolization
Uterine Fibroid Embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that involves inserting a thin catheter through a small needle in the groin area. This needle delivers microspheres (small beads) into the artery that feeds the fibroid, blocking the blood supply and causing the fibroid to shrink.
