The Greater Baltimore Medical Center, a 372-bed regional medical center, is located in a beautiful suburban setting just a few miles north of Baltimore City. A nationally recognized leader in Women's Health Care, the Medical Center serves as a medical and surgical referral center to a metropolitan area of two million people.
GBMC was built at its present site in 1965, from the merger of two older and highly respected Baltimore institutions: the Hospital for the Women of Maryland and the Presbyterian Eye, Ear, and Throat Charity Hospital. Since then, GBMC has continued to add professional services to its already impressive capability.
The Medical Center opened the region's first ambulatory surgery center in the late 1970s. This was followed by Physicians Pavilion East, with dedicated space for physician offices, hospital services and a multi-purpose conference center. A comprehensive Obstetrics Center, with 17 state-of-the-art Labor/Delivery/Recovery rooms, three operating rooms, two recovery rooms, as well as Prenatal and Antepartum testing suites opened in 1992. The facility also includes a newly-renovated Antepartum Unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, a Nursery and Postpartum floors.
Physicians' Pavilion West house the region's busiest outpatient GYN Surgical Suite. It also contains the offices of the Department of Gynecology and the OB-GYN Clinic. Residents and full-time faculty work closely together in this facility. The Pavilion also contains The Cancer Center at GBMC, the Ophthalmology Department and Clinic, the Women's Hospital Fertility and IVF Program and Assisted Reproductive Technologies Lab., as well as physician offices.
In addition to on-campus medical and surgical activities, GBMC maintains an active clinic in the inner city and staffs various Baltimore County clinics in certain specialties, including Obstetrics and Gynecology, Medicine, Colo-Rectal Surgery, Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, Podiatry and Ophthalmology. All residents receive exceptional clinical experience.
