Jan 02, 2014
GBMC HealthCare Inc. is pleased to announce that, as of Jan. 1, 2014, that the Towson based group, Orthopaedic Specialists of Maryland, P.A., will officially join Greater Baltimore Medical Associates (GBMA). Orthopaedic Specialists of Maryland, P.A., includes orthopedic surgeons Lee M. Schmidt, M.D., Allan Lanzo, M.D., Stewart Koehler, M.D. and Howard Bathon, M.D.

“We have long been proud to have the physicians of Orthopaedic Specialists of Maryland, P.A. as members of the GBMC medical staff,” said Bennett (Ben) J. Beres, Chief Operating Officer of GBMA. “We now welcome these physicians as members of the employed physician enterprise group of GBMC Healthcare System, GBMA. This will be an exciting and positive collaboration that will enhance our ability to provide the best possible orthopedic care in our region.”

GBMA, which is one of five entities that comprises GBMC HealthCare Inc., now includes 41 owned physician practices with a variety of specialties including Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, OB/GYN, General and Specialty Surgery and Oncology.

Lee M. Schmidt, M.D., who helped establish and remains the medical director of the GBMC Joint and Spine Center, said that joining GBMA will be beneficial to all of the patients his practice serves. “As a part of the GBMC HealthCare System, we will be able to offer our patients a stronger link between the highest quality community-based orthopedic care and the wide array of advanced orthopedic programs and services available at GBMC,” says Schmidt. “Integrating our practice into GBMA will streamline the process of referring a patient, optimize the coordination of care between specialists and referring physicians, and reduce needless duplication of services.”

Schmidt adds that patients will notice very few differences in the way the practice will conduct business and that the same staff will continue to serve their patient base. “We remain committed in providing our patients the best care possible in the same office we have occupied for so many years. In short, our stationery may change, but our loyalty and dedication to our patients and care will remain the same and will be enhanced by being part of GBMA,” says Schmidt.
