Each individual tolerates foods differently, but since your surgery, you may note that certain foods that used to agree with you don’t anymore. Overall your ability to tolerate foods depends on the condition of your teeth, how well you chew, and how you cut your foods. Try to keep track of the foods that you discover you are unable to manage in a written or mental list.

Below is a general list of foods that may commonly be difficult to tolerate after weight loss surgery:

  • Tough meats, especially steak or pork

Solutions: Buy lean hamburger, try marinating solid meats or use a tenderizer.

  • Dry Chicken
  • Hotdogs
  • Membranes of oranges and grapefruit
  • Skins and seeds of some fruits and vegetables
  • Fibrous vegetables such as corn, celery, and sweet potatoes, broccoli stems

Solutions: Use a blender and a strainer as needed to get rid of indigestible fiber.

  • Bread, pasta, or rice
  • Fried foods
  • Chili or spicy foods
