Lauren Schnaper, M.D. is Director of the Greater Baltimore Medical Center Sandra and Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast Care Center and Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Specializing in benign and malignant diseases of the breast, Dr. Schnaper is nationally recognized for her work.

In addition to direct patient care, she is active in national clinical research and has chaired the Breast Surgery Subcommittee of the Cancer and Leukemia Group B, a nationwide NCI-sponsored cooperative clinical trials group. Her clinical research focuses on breast cancer in the elderly and her basic sciences research focuses on circulating proteins in breast cancer.        

Dr. Schnaper has been honored by many community groups and was designated as one of the best doctors in America by American Health Magazine in 1996.

Scott Maizel, MD, FACSScott Maizel, MD, FACS

Dr. Maizel received his medical degree from the Albany Medical College of Union University in 1976.  He did his internship and residency training at the University of Minnesota Hospitals in Minneapolis, Minnesota, completing training there in 1983. 

Dr. Maizel has practiced surgery in the greater Baltimore area since that time, specializing in the care of women’s breast problems for over 20 years.  He is board certified in General Surgery and has been a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons since 1985.  Dr. Maizel is the immediate Past-President of the Maryland Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and serves on the American College of Surgeons Committee for Patient Safety and Professional Liability.

H. Alexander Munitz, MD

As director of the Pavilion Imaging Center and the Imaging division of the Comprehensive Breast Care Center, Dr. Munitz has championed the philosophy of rapid transition from screening mammography through diagnostic mammography to biopsy, frequently within 24 hours. He believes that offering immediate biopsy to patients with significant findings on mammography and ultrasound, results in marked decrease in the anxiety normally attendant on such procedures. A member of Advanced Radiology, Dr. Munitz heads a core group of five radiologists with speciality in breast diagnosis and intervention.

Judy M. Destouet, MD

Judy M. Destouet, MD

A nationally recognized specialist in breast imaging, Dr. Destouet is Chief of Mammography for Advanced Radiology, P.A. Currently, she chairs the Mammography Accreditation Committee which, along with the FDA, oversees and develops standards for mammography practice throughout the country.

Dr. Destouet is an honorary Fellow of the American College of Radiology and is past President of the American Association for Women Radiologists.

John B. Richardson, MD, FACS

Dr. Richardson is a general surgeon with training in vascular surgery. In 1978, Dr. Richardson joined the practice of Finney, Trimble & Associates in Lutherville, Maryland. In addition to his interest in breast health and his involvement with the Comprehensive Breast Care Center, Dr. Richardson has been Medical Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit at GBMC since 1977. Dr. Richardson is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and of many other professional associations including the Baltimore Academy of Surgeons, the Chesapeake Vascular Society, Eastern Surgical Society, and the American Society of Breast Surgeons.

Sheri Slezak, MD, FACSSheri Slezak, MD, FACS

Dr. Slezak is a plastic surgeon who specializes in breast reconstruction after breast cancer surgery, breast reduction and augmentation. She practices at GBMC and at the University of Maryland Medical System where she is on the fulltime faculty as an Associate Professor of Plastic Surgery.

 

Barbara Raksin, RN

Ms. Raksin has dedicated more than 20 years of her career to the care and education of breast cancer patients and survivors. As part of the Sandra and Malcolm Berman Comprehensive Breast Care Center, she serves as an advocate for many patients and works to further awareness of better breast health. Additionally, Ms. Raksin serves on the Board of Directors of the Maryland Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen For The Cure Breast Cancer Foundation.

Hanita Sawhney, MD

Dr. Sawhney completed her internship in obstetrics and gynecology before changing to Psychiatry.  She has a special interest in women’s mental health including breast cancer and menopause.  She works at the Comprehensive Breast Care Center on Monday afternoons and Thursday mornings to help patients cope with their illness.  Both medications and therapy may be used to treat anxiety and depression that can result from the diagnosis or treatment of breast cancer.

Meredith Lizmi, CRNP

Ms. Lizmi is a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. She has extensive experience in the field of gynecology and other related female conditions.  She is now specializing in benign breast problems and breast cancer. Ms. Lizmi works closely with Dr. Schnaper assessing, evaluating, providing follow up care and educating our patients.
