GBMC's Radiation Oncology Department is a model for excellence. The department features three linear accelerators (with electron beam capability), a hyperthermia unit, treatment planning simulator, CT unit, 3-D computer dosimetry, and a wide range of brachytherapy (radioactive material implantation) capabilities (including High Dose Rate remote after loader (HDR).
Three board-certified radiation oncologists and two board-certified medical physicists are on staff. There is always a board-certified physician in the department; all of these physicians have been cited for excellence in Baltimore Magazine's medical issue.
A significant and often under-appreciated aspect of cancer care is the ancillary and collaborative support provided throughout GBMC's Cancer Institute. Our outstanding Oncology Support Services provide important patient care before, during, and after treatment. The collaboration with medical and surgical oncology specialists allows a comprehensive approach with the promise of excellence and the hope of recovery.
The Department has a rigorous Quality Assurance Program to assure the highest standard of treatment. A component of this program is a patient satisfaction survey which includes a variety of questions regarding their care from the moment of first contact. Results show a 97% Good to Excellent response. This applies to reception and secretarial staff, nurses, physicians, and treatment technologists.
The Department staff has extensive expertise in many areas. For example, we have the busiest and most experienced physician and physics staff in the community for radioactive seed implantation for prostate cancer. GBMC is the first community hospital in the area and one of very few hospitals nationwide to offer the sophisticated Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) technology to oncology patients. GBMC also offers Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). This is a process of imaging patients using CT-guided field visualization.
The Department has extensive experience in treating breast cancer. The breast cancer expertise is an important component of GBMC's Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center. All patients are provided with the highest quality of radiotherapeutic care.
In addition, through participation in national clinical trials, the Department helps identify and bring the most promising therapies and new cancer treatments to our patients as soon as possible.
