Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer is considered the forgotten cancer, yet every day two people in Maryland are diagnosed with this disease; Maryland ranks 8th in the nation for oral cancer mortality.  It is important that your dentist performs an oral screening during your routine dental checkups.

Oral screenings are held several times each year.  There will be a screening  available during Oral, Head & Neck Cancer Awareness Week (OHANCAW) in April, 2009.  A nominal fee of $15 applies, and registration is required.

The American Cancer Society recommends that adults check the mouth, gums, and tongue every month as a means of detecting possible oral cancers in the early changes. This is especially important for people who smoke cigarettes or cigars, chew tobacco, use snuff, and/or consume alcoholic beverages.  For a guide to the oral exam, click here. Your dentist should perform complete oral examinations during dental visits.
