Cancer Screening Guidelines


How frequently should you be screened for cancer?  It varies, depending on the kind of cancer and your age.  What follows are the American Cancer Society's screening guidelines.  You should, of course, always follow the advice of your own physician.

Call physician with changes and concerns.

High-risk women should consult with their physician to discuss the need for more frequent or additional testing.

A Breast MRI may be appropriate for women at higher risk, including: 
 *High-risk women include those with a family history, genetic tendency or past diagnosis of breast cancer.

CERVIX

Pelvic examination

Pap Test

Within 3 years of beginning sexual relations or by age 21


Yearly

 

After three or more consecutive satisfactory examinations with normal findings, the Pap test may be performed less frequently at the discretion of the physician.

PROSTATE

Digital Rectal Examination
(DRE)*

High-risk men should consult with their physician to discuss the need for earlier testing or more frequent testing.

*Clinical skin exams should be part of routine physical exams. Notify your physician of any changes or concerns.

ORAL

Oral Self-Examination

Men and Women 18+ yrs


Monthly

Notify your physician of any changes or concerns. Routine oral exams should be part of routine dental exams every 6 months.

CANCER-RELATED

Checkups

Men and women 20-39 yrs

Men and women 40+ yrs

Every 3 years

Yearly

The cancer-related checkups should include examination of thyroid, testicles, ovaries, lymph nodes, oral cavity, and skin. Physicians should counsel individuals regarding tobacco, sun exposure, diet, sexual practices, environmental and occupational exposures.
