Factors That Influence Patient Progress :

No one is able to predict a child’s performance with a cochlear implant. We do know that progress occurs at different rates and degrees for cochlear implant recipients. Progress is dependent upon many factors:

  1. Age of onset of deafness
  2. Duration of deafness
  3. Age of implantation
  4. Number of electrodes inserted and activated
  5. Proper use and maintenance of the processor
  6. Consistent use of device
  7. Previous speech and spoken language development
  8. Neurological involvement
  9. Cognitive and learning abilities
  10. Exposure to meaningful auditory input
  11. Interaction with normally hearing peers
  12. Academic support services
  13. Family support
  14. Appropriate expectations of family, friends and services providers
  15. Appropriate aural rehabilitation treatment as recommended
  16. Consistent follow-up and monitoring by CI team
