Departments Conducting Research
The following GBMC departments and affiliated centers continually offer clinical trials to their patients and maintain dedicated research staff who assist investigators in ensuring protocol requirements are met, help guide patients through their treatment, and collect data required by study sponsors.
The Milton J. Dance Head and Neck team of researchers is part of a highly successful interdisciplinary team encompassing a wide range of disciplines including head and neck surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, oral pathology and medicine, speech pathology, oncology nursing, oncology social work, and oncology dietitians.
Head and neck cancers encompass tumors in the nasal passages, mouth, throat, larynx, salivary glands, neck, skull base, upper esophagus, trachea and thyroid gland. The Head and Neck Center is dedicated to the development and implementation of highly interactive head and neck clinical research trials targeting elucidation of the cellular and molecular mechanisms of cancer development, and surgical, medical oncology and radiation oncology-based treatment strategies to optimize functional outcomes and improve patients' quality of life through functional improvements and increased survival. Research focus includes the following areas in head and neck cancer research clinical trials:
- Cellular and molecular biology of cancer
- Robotic surgery [daVinci system]
- Functional outcome studies and quality of life issues
- New chemotherapy approaches
Integration of precancer prevention and treatments
- Role of human papilloma virus [HPV] in head and neck cancer
Image-based radiation therapy
- Use of ultrasound on swallowing evaluation and rehabilitation

The Sandra and Malcolm Berman Cancer Institute participates in clinical research as part of a national network involving most of the major cancer centers in the U.S., as well as pharmaceutical companies, and as part of the Johns Hopkins Clinical Research Network (JHCRN). The institute presently offers more than 50 active clinical trails to treat a variety of malignancies. The cancer clinical trials program at the Berman Cancer Institute has been active for over 20 years. Research support staff currently includes one clinical research coordinator, two research nurses, and four clinical research associates who monitor clinical trials patients and report clinical trials data to sponsors.

Currently, we are studying the M6-C artificial disc, an investigational device designed to relieve pain and restore natural motion in the spince.

Bay West Endocrinology Associates, is located on the GBMC campus and is one of the largest groups of endocrinologists in the mid-Atlantic region. The practice is comprised of twelve endocrinologists, one nurse practitioner, and two physician assistants. The majority of clinical trials offered are for diabetes treatment, complications associated with diabetes, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, cardiovascular outcomes, and device studies. MODEL Clinical Research, LLC is located within the practice, and facilitates research for Bay West Endocrinology Associates, employing 4 clinical research coordinators and housing an onsite laboratory facility. This research facility includes a database of over 10,000 patients.
