GBMC’s DEXA scans are performed in the Department of Radiology by licensed Radiological Technologists, trained in bone density exams. Interpreting physicians are certified by the International Society of Clinical Densitometry.
Osteoporosis risk factors include:
- Aging
- Menopause
- Genetics
- Diet
- Gender (females are most susceptible)
- Environmental, social and medical conditions
GBMC bone desity services offered:

- Fracture Risk Assessments (FRAX)
- Education in osteoporosis prevention, nutrition and exercise

Joan Blomquist, MD Division Head, UrogynecologyDr. Joan Blomquist is a full-time faculty member in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Division of Urogynecology at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. She received her undergraduate degree from Grinell College and medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine. Dr. Blomquist completed her residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Magee-Womens Hospital in Pittsburgh and went on to complete a two-year fellowship in Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. In addition to her interests in female urology, Dr. Blomquist is a member of the International Society of Clinical Densitometry. She is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Susan Cooper, RT (R)(M) CBDT
Ms. Cooper is a full-time Radiological Technologist in the Diagnostic Radiology Department. She graduated from Baltimore City Hospitals School of Radiologic Technology. She's certified by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists in radiography and mammography and by the International Society for Clinical Densitometry. She's a member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and the International Society for Clinical Densitometry.
