The Department of Obstetrics

The Department of Obstetrics is the largest in Central Maryland with the second largest obstetrical volume in the state. GBMC recorded 4,747 deliveries in 2000. The hospital has 42 beds assigned for patients' care: 30 post-partrum beds and 12 antepartum beds. The new Delivery Suite, with 17 LDR's (labor/delivery/recovery) opened in November 1992 and the new Antepartum unit opened in 2000. There are three operating rooms. Fetal monitoring is centralized with state-of-the-art equipment. An Antepartum testing unit, Ultrasound area and Genetics Laboratory are part of the new facility. The Perinatal Unit includes all antepartum assessment (non-stress testing, biophysical profiles, percutaneous umbilical blood sampling, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling). The PGY-2 resident is in charge of the High Risk Obstetrical Service. The PGY-3 Resident is responsible for overseeing the entire Obstretrical Service which includes the interpretation of all antepartum testing.
The residents also partcipate in the management and care of the private patients. Obstetrical didatics include: 1) Chairman Case Discussion Rounds 2x/week; 2) Weekly Perinatal and FHR tracing Rounds; 3) Bi-monthly Grand Rounds; 4) Monthly Perinatal-Neonatal Rounds; 5) Monthly Multidisciplinary Rounds (Perinatal, Neonatal, Genetics, Pediatric Surgery).

Maternal-Fetal Medicine is concerned with the successful management of pregnancies complicated by any maternal, fetal or placental problems. All antepartum patients admitted to the Antepartum unit are managed by the junior resident under the supervision senior resident and the Maternal Fetal Medicine Division.

The Prenatal Diagnostic Center offers prenatal genetic counseling, Level 3 Ultrasound, chorionic villus sampling, percutaneous umbilical blood sampling as well as early and mid-trimester amniocentesis. Midtrimester amniocentesis on clinic patients will be performed by the resident under the supervision of the Director. The Director also gives didactic lectures in the area of genetics as related to Obstetrics and Gynecology.
