40th Anniversary Campaign Steering Committee
In support of the mission “to provide medical care of the highest quality to each patient" and in celebration of its long history of service to the Greater Baltimore Community, GBMC conducted its 40th Anniversary Campaign, which successfully concluded in December of 2003. With the extraordinary support of our grateful patients, families, volunteers and community, the 40th Anniversary Campaign exceeded its goal of $30 million, raising over $35 million in support of our important initiatives-building, renovation and endowment.
BUILDING AND RENOVATION
One of the most noticeable changes made possible by the 40th Anniversary Campaign is the completion of a new 90,000 square foot addition which houses an expanded 43 bed emergency department featuring an Urgent Care Center for patients with less serious needs and a Rapid Diagnostic Unit, where patients can be observed while awaiting test results; a new pediatric emergency department and inpatient unit; four state-of-the-art surgical suites with an adjacent new family waiting room; and a new 12 bed surgical intensive care unit. With the opening of these new facilities, we are able to provide the very best in medical care to a diverse patient population and are able to serve many more community residents than ever before. We are pleased to say that these new facilities have already received excellent community, patient and staff feedback.
GBMC has also completed updates and renovations on over 75,000 square feet of existing hospital space, including the Post-Partum Unit, featuring a specialized High-Risk Obstetrical Unit, several common spaces, such as the main entrance from Garage D, and other key areas. These renovations provided more efficient use of space along with additional space for patient care and has helped us to maximize the resources available to our medical staff and patients.
Lastly, in the spring of 2005, GBMC opened the new Physicians Pavillion North. This medical office building will contain GBMC programs and related ventures, such as the Allergy and Sinus Center, Comprehensive Obesity Management Program, and expanded Endovascular Center and an ear, nose and throat center, as well as privately leased medical office space. We look forward to all of the new physicians and services that this addition will bring to our patients and families, as well as the convenience of the new Physicians Pavilion North Garage and its associated 1,000 new parking spaces that will make visiting the GBMC campus easier for the entire community.
Gilchrist Hospice Care has successfully completed its $10 million endowment campaign, with the exceptionally generous assistance of the Hospice of Baltimore Board of Directors. This endowment will help Gilchrist Hospice Care provide even more families with outstanidng end-of-life care.
In recognition of the importance of quality of nursing care, the Board of the Hospital for the Women of Maryland of Baltimore City generously created the H. Norman and Jeanne Baetjer Center for Nursing Excellence Endowment, a $2 million fund established to promote nursing excellence at GBMC. However, this is only the beginning of our efforts. In order to help address the regional and national issues raised by the ongoing nursing shortage, we must continue to domore to invest in acquiring and retaining the very best nurses so that our patients receive the very best front-line care. GBMC is looking forward to future fund-raising efforts in this area, including the upcoming Legacy Chase at Shawan Downs, the proceeds of which will be dedicated to benefiting GBMC nursing.
These are just the highlights of what wehave been able to accomplish in the past few years with your support. Extraordinary and enthusiastic participation in GBMC's 40th Anniversary Campaign from individuals, corporations and foundations that strongly believe in our mission resulted in a total of $35 million raised for the projects and programs mentioned above-$5 million greater than our goal! We were honored to receive gifts from more than 2400 individuals, 45 corporate partners and 20 philanthropic foundations during the campaign. This broad based and diverse support brings home the fact that we are all affectde by the quality and availability of health care. It also reflects the confidence of our donors that GBMC will continue to deliver superlative health care to the residents of Greater Baltimore. We look forward to the future and to continuing our proud history as the premier community hospital in the region. Thank you again for your support!
