Patriot, Husband, Father & Philanthropist
Frank
Liebman has always understood the importance of world-class healthcare. Born
in 1924 in Newton, Massachusetts, Frank’s father was Chief Radiologist
at Jewish General Hospital in Montreal. Sixty years later another doctor would
play a pivotal role in his life.
Frank’s wife of nearly 50 years, Elaine, was battling lung cancer. Acting
on a recommendation, the couple met Dr. Gary Cohen, Director of GBMC’s
Cancer Center. “The first doctor we saw was so cold. He said, ‘I
give her one year,’ and left the room. Dr. Cohen gave us a whole new
outlook. He gave us hope. He said, ‘We’ll fight this thing. I think
we have a real chance.’”
After serving in General Hap Arnold’s Army-Air Corps during World War
II, Frank took a job with the Rose-Derry children’s furniture company,
in California. He later met Elaine on a blind date in Baltimore, when he was
transferred back East.
A native Baltimorean, Elaine attended Goucher College. “We had a wonderful
first date. We went to the Hunt Club and watched the horse races. We had a
marvelous rapport which lasted until the day she died.”
Under the care of Dr. Cohen, Elaine’s cancer went into remission and
she lived three more years. “The main reason I feel so close to GBMC
is because of Dr. Cohen – in so many ways that I cannot describe. He
did everything that could possibly have been done.”
In gratitude for Dr. Cohen’s care of Elaine, Frank has contributed six
Charitable Gift Annuities to GBMC. “There is a definite benefit in making
these gifts. I will actually receive income equaling my original contribution
by the time I’m 85.” Mr. Liebman concluded, “What really
makes it special is the good feeling I get from giving to an institution that
gave me two years I would not have had with my wife.”
