Opening the GBMC Emergency Department
The “flashing name tags” welcomed over 220 of GBMC’s most generous friends, and supporters of its 40th Anniversary Campaign, to a celebration and preview party for the “newly expanded, state of the art” Emergency Department on May 20, 2004.
GBMC President and CEO Laurence M. Merlis expressed the medical center’s appreciation for the many extraordinary gifts that brought the newly expanded Adult and Pediatric Emergency Department from a dream to a reality.
The new Emergency Department, headed by Dr. John Wogan, brings many unique features including state of the art technology which will allow emergency professionals to access patient records, test results and other essential information at the patient’s bedside.

Other features which will ensure the very best treatment for incoming patients include a “quick look nurse” who will be stationed at the entrance to the Emergency Department and who will be able to immediately assess the incoming patient’s medical condition and direct them to the appropriate area for treatment; and the new Pediatric Emergency and
In-Patient Care Department, headed by Dr. Timothy Doran, especially designed for the youngest patients and their families with its fiberoptic, twinkling ceiling, interactive computer games and separate observation and care unit.
When the ribbon stretched across the entrance to the “Urgent Care” unit was cut by GBMC HealthCare Board Chair William H. Conkling, Jr., past HealthCare Board Chair Barbara B. Lucas, GBMC Foundation Chair Brooke J. Hodges and past Foundation Chair William A. Kroh, guests were invited to tour this amazing new feature of medical care at GBMC, enjoy refreshments and receive the most heartfelt appreciation from board members and staff.
The new Emergency Department opened to serve the emergency medical needs of our community on May 27th.
We hope that you never need to visit the Emergency Department at GBMC, but if you do, you may be assured of the very best treatment and care thanks to the generosity of many individuals, foundations and corporations in Baltimore.
