The Joseph S. Keelty Society recognizes GBMC’s strongest philanthropic partners, those who have provided a total of $250,000 or more in support, either through outright gifts during their lifetime or with an estate distribution.  We are pleased to announce that thirteen new members were installed by GBMC Foundation Board Chair Brooke J. Hodges, GBMC HealthCare Board Chair William H. Conkling, Jr., and Hospice of Baltimore Board Chair, Pedie Killebrew:

Jayne Nuttle, President, GBMC Volunteer Auxiliary and Charles Woodbury, Estate of Margaret Bachman

The Estate of Margaret R. Bachman
Ms. Bachman, an art teacher and avid traveler, generously supported the Milton J. Dance, Jr. Head and Neck Rehabilitation Center with a bequest.

Black & Decker
Black & Decker is a longtime philanthropic partner of GBMC, and we are grateful for the service of Black & Decker’s Senior Vice-President for Public Affairs, Barbara Lucas, immediate past Chair and current member of the GBMC HealthCare Board.  We thank Black & Decker for their exemplary support of GBMC’s 40th Anniversary Campaign.

Alex. Brown & Sons Charitable Foundation, Inc.
The Alex. Brown and Sons Charitable Foundation has been in the forefront of Baltimore philanthropy for many years, and GBMC is pleased to count the Foundation as one of the 40th Anniversary Campaign’s leading supporters.

Milton J. Dance, Jr. Endowment
The extraordinary generosity of the Dance Endowment has created the Milton J. Dance, Jr. Head and Neck Rehabilitation Center, which brings a new level of service to GBMC cancer patients and stands as one of the best programs of
its kind in the nation.

The Estate of William Axer Graham
Mr. Graham generously supported GBMC through his estate.  We are grateful for his generosity, and for his past service on the GBMC HealthCare Board.

The Kresge Foundation
The Kresge Foundation provided substantial, leading support to GBMC’s 40th Anniversary Campaign through its challenge grant program.  The Foundation specializes in supporting capital projects and actively seeks out institutions, like GBMC, that have broad community support.

The Middendorf Foundation
The Foundation’s extraordinary support of GBMC’s Medical Library is helping us to ensure that the knowledge and expertise of our medical staff remains up-to-the-minute and that the resources of GBMC are highly accessible to our patients, families, and community.

Janet Streit and Michael Scheffres

The John J. Mitchell, Jr. Charitable Trust

The Trust’s generous support of the Hoover Low Vision Center and the Cochlear Implant Program make it possible for older and low-income members of the greater Baltimore community to maintain their independence and quality of living.  GBMC is grateful for their continuing assistance.

The Estate of Samuel Morrison, M.D.
Dr. Morrison was a dedicated and much-beloved physician who supported GBMC through his estate.  Patients remember him with abundant affection, and we are exceedingly honored and proud that Dr. Morrison has honored GBMC with this gift.

The Estate of Eugene Scheffres
Mr. Scheffres supported the Milton J. Dance, Jr. Head and Neck Rehabilitation Center through his estate plan with an exceptionally generous gift.  A lifelong composer, poet, and noted philanthropist, Mr. Scheffres focused his support on patient care and comfort.

John Somerville, The Wilhelmina Hahn Waidner Trust and
J. Christopher C. Justis, Jr.

The Wilhelmina Hahn Waidner Trust

Mrs. Waidner, known to her friends as ‘Billie’, passed away in 1984. Through her trust, the interest and dedication to GBMC that she carried throughout her life continues.  The Trust provided outstanding support to GBMC’s 40th Anniversary Campaign and GBMC is grateful for the continuing
partnership with the Trust.

The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company
Contractor for many of the recent capital and expansion projects at GBMC (and responsible for many greater Baltimore landmarks), Whiting-Turner has generously supported GBMC’s growth, as well as provided outstanding support for the Hospice of Baltimore.

The Cecelia Young Willard Helping Fund
The Fund, and the Willard family, have provided exemplary support for GBMC and the Hospice of Baltimore.  We are proud to count them as leading supporters of the 40th Anniversary Campaign.

Nine of the above inductees were present to accept their memberships, and many of the 26 inaugural 2001 Keelty Society members were on hand to help celebrate, as was Mr. Joseph S. Keelty himself.  As GBMC President and CEO Larry Merlis remarked, “GBMC relies on the philanthropic investment of partners like the Keelty Society members.  Their commitment to seeing GBMC and the Hospice of Baltimore thrive makes our success possible.  We are exceedingly fortunate to have the trust, investment, and generosity of all of the Keelty members.”
In early June 2004, each of the new members will be honored with plaques bearing their names.  The plaques recognizing the thirteen new inductees will join the 2001 Keelty members on the ‘Keelty Wall,’ located in the main hospital.

GBMC is pleased and proud to continue to work with these very generous supporters and to welcome them to the prestigious Joseph S. Keelty Society.

Please contact Theresa M. Law, J.D., Director of Major Gifts and Grants, at 443.849.3765 or  tlaw@gbmc.org, with any questions about the Keelty Society.
