ABOUT THE HARVEY INSTITUTE

The Harvey Institute for Human Genetics, named for the late Mr. and Mrs. F. Barton Harvey, Jr., was endowed in June, 1997.        The Institute provides integrated genetic services through a staff that includes physicians, geneticists, genetic counselors, sonographers, and laboratory technologists with expertise in clinical, pediatric, reproductive, and laboratory genetics.  All services are housed on the 2nd Level of GBMC Hospital.  We also provide genetic education to a variety of audiences, including healthcare professionals and the lay public.

MISSION AND VISION

To deliver world-class diagnostic capabilities, access to state-of-the-art genetic testing, counseling, patient management, and education.

GOALS AND VALUES

  • Recognize that management of genetic disease involves meeting the needs of entire families as well as individual patients. Provide genetic expertise to meet the diagnostic and clinical needs of referring physicians, patients, and the community at large.
  • Collaborate with all medical disciplines to develop partnerships with patients and families in planning and implementing their care.
  • Respect for the ethnic, social, cultural, religious, socioeconomic, and genetic diversity of individuals, families, and populations.
  • Deliver quality care cost-effectively.

SERVICES

Genetic counseling is an integral part of genetic services.

Cancer Genetics: We provide cancer risk assesment and gene testing for inherited cancer syndromes.

The Cleft Lip & Palate Team:  In conjunction with other GBMC specialty services, the team provides consultation for chilren and newborns with congenital malformations of the head and neck.

Laboratory Genetics: All GBMC laboratories which provide genetic testing are certified and participate in national quality-assurance programs.  Because some tests are available in only a few laboratories throughout the world, we have established international collaborations to provide comprehensive genetic testing.

Pediatric Genetics:  The pediatric genetics unit designs and provides diagnostic and continuing care for children with birth defects and developmental disabilities.

Prenatal Genetics: We offer genetic counseling, amniocentesis, chorionic villus sampling, first trimester screening, and complete ultrasound evaluation of at-risk pregnancies.
