Neal Friedlander, MD, FACP Neal M. Friedlander, MD, FACP
Chairman, Department of Medicine

Dr. Friedlander graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and the Harvard Law School. After practicing law, he received his medical degree from the University of Maryland Medical School. Dr. Friedlander completed his internal medicine residency at Mercy Medical Center in Baltimore Maryland where he was Chief Resident. He has practiced internal medicine since 1984 and became Chairman of the Department of Medicine in March 2006. In addition to internal medicine, Dr. Friedlander is interested in issues involving patient safety and quality as well as the challenges that face physicians and society as the practice of medicine evolves.

Paul Foster, MD, FACP Paul N. Foster, MD, FACP
Program Director

Dr. Foster graduated from Yale University. Prior to entering medical school, Dr. Foster spent three years in the US Peace Corps as a high school teacher and public health worker. He graduated from Harvard Medical School and completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Washington in Seattle. He was a Chief Resident at Swedish Hospital as part of his senior year of training. He comes to GBMC from Tucson, Arizona where he was Internal Medicine Unit Chief of a community health center. Clinical interests include cross-cultural medicine, medical error reduction, and general internal medicine.

Hmu Minn, MD, FACP Hmu Minn, MD, FACP
Associate Program Director

Dr. Minn received his medical degree from Institute of Medicine I, Yangon, Myanmar and worked as a medical officer before coming to the United States. He completed his internal medicine training at Greater Baltimore Medical Center where he also went on to serve as chief resident. He completed his geriatric fellowship training at University of Maryland Medical Center. His interests include resident education and geriatric medicine.

Surendra Marur, MD, MPH, FACP Surendra Marur, MD, MPH, FACP
Associate Program Director

Dr. Marur received his Bachelors of Science in Engineering from The University of Michigan before traveling to India to complete his medical education at the Kasturba Medical College in Manipal. He then completed his training in Internal Medicine at Wayne State University / Sinai-Grace Hospital. He joined the Internal Medicine Residency faculty at Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit where he also served as their Ambulatory Clinic Director and worked as a primary care physician. He completed his Masters of Public Health from The University of Michigan during his tenure at Sinai-Grace Hospital. When he located to Maryland, Dr. Marur worked as a hospitalist at Frederick Memorial Hospital before joining the faculty at GBMC. His interests include Preventive Medicine, Medical Education, and Health Care Management and Policy.

Funmi Bayode, MD, MPH, MSFunmi Bayode, MD, MPH, MS

Dr. Bayode earned her medical degree from the Ohio State University College of Medicine and completed her residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She holds master’s degrees in Public Health from the University of South Carolina and in Clinical Research from the University of Maryland in Baltimore. Board-certified in Internal Medicine, Dr. Bayode was previously employed as a hospitalist at Montgomery Hospital and York Hospital, both in Pennsylvania. She has also worked as a per diem hospitalist at Medstar Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore.

Marie Chatham, MD, FCCP, DABSM Marie Chatham, MD, FCCP, DABSM

Dr. Chatham graduated from University of Maryland College of Medicine. She completed her Internal Residency at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center and her Pulmonary/Critical Care Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Chatham recently accepted a full time position here to have more time to work with residents and as well as do other projects for GBMC. Such a project this last year was to partner with residents interested in pulmonary and critical care and construct a hospital-wide system to reduce readmissions for COPD. She also does a weekly lunch-time teaching session with the ICU team. Special areas of interest include pulmonary hypertension and asthma. She maintains professional ties with both University of Maryland and Hopkins.

Pauline Daley, MD Pauline Daley, MD

Board-certified in both Internal Medicine and Geriatrics, Dr. Daley was most recently employed at Levindale Hebrew Hospital and Geriatric Center in Baltimore. Prior to Levindale, she served as internist, geriatrician and medical director at Western Maryland Hospital Center in Hagerstown. Dr. Daley earned her medical degree from University of the West Indies in Kingston, Jamaica. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Baltimore, where she served as chief resident, along with a fellowship in Geriatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. Dr. Daley practices both Internal and Geriatric Medicine and embraces a holistic approach to healthcare.

Robert Ferguson, MD Robert Ferguson, MD

Dr. Ferguson previously served as Chief of Medicine and Program Director at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland and has held numerous academic positions, including Associate Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Clinical Professor at University of Maryland. Dr. Ferguson was educated at Cornell University Medical College, where he earned his medical degree. He completed residencies at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York and Mount Sinai Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. Dr. Ferguson is board-certified in Internal Medicine with a Certificate of Added Competence in Geriatrics.

Clair Francomano, MD Clair Francomano, MD

Dr. Clair Francomano attended Yale College as an undergraduate and received her M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She trained in Internal Medicine and Medical Genetics at Johns Hopkins and joined the full-time Hopkins faculty in 1984. In 1994 she became Chief of the Medical Genetics Branch at the National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, where she served as Clinical Director from 1996-2001. From 2001-2005 she was Chief of the Human Genetics and Integrative Medicine Section in the Laboratory of Genetics, National Institute on Aging. She joined the GBMC faculty in 2005 as Director of Adult Genetics at the Harvey Institute of Human Genetics, and joined the GBMA practice in July 2006.

Lisa Greisman, MD Lisa Greisman, MD

A graduate of the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Dr. Greisman completed her Internal Medicine residency at the University of Virginia, followed by a fellowship in Infectious Disease at the University of Maryland. Prior to her hire at GBMC, Dr. Greisman served as Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine for the University of Maryland’s School of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases. Additionally, she held several teaching roles at the University of Maryland Medical System’s Infectious Diseases Inpatient Ward and outpatient clinics.

Eugene A. Obah, MD Eugene A. Obah, MD

Dr. Obah graduated from the University of Nigeria College of Medicine and completed a residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital. He came to the United States after accepting a postdoctural research position in the Division of Molecular and Clinical Rheumatology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, where he spent two years researching the molecular biology of HIV infections. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center and was chosen to serve as a Chief Resident in his third year. In addition to general internal medicine, Dr. Obah is interested in medical education, cardiovascular disease and clinical epidemiology.

Alina Sanda, MD Alina Sanda, MD

Dr. Sanda earned her medical degree at University of Medicine and Pharmacy Carol Davila in Bucharest, Romania and completed postgraduate medical education in Internal Medicine at John H. Stronger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in Chicago, Illinois. Additionally, she completed an Infectious Diseases fellowship at Westchester Medical Center, New York Medical College. Before coming to GBMC, Dr. Sanda served as Clinical Associate Professor of Medicine at State University of New York, Health Science Center at Brooklyn and as Chief of Infectious Diseases at St. John’s Episcopal Hospital in Far Rockaway, New York.

Renu Thomas, MD Renu Thomas, MD

After having grown up in Baltimore, Dr. Thomas spent time in India where she completed medical school, graduating from Trivandrum Medical College/ University of Kerala. She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at GBMC and in 2003 joined GBMC's hospitalist group which she has remained a member of since. She joined the faculty practice part time in 2011. Her interests include bettering inpatient medical care and international health.

Gregory Bassman, MDGregory Bassmann, MD

Dr. Bassmann recently joined GBMC as a pulmonary specialist for the practice of Pulmonary Medicine at GBMC. He also serves as an intensivist on GBMC's critical care team. Dr. Bassmann obtained his Master of Science degree from Drexel University and achieved his doctorate at New York Medical College. He completed both his residency and his pulmonary and critical care fellowships at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Dr. Bassmann is board-certified in Internal Medicine and comes to GBMC from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, where he instructed Introduction to Clinical Medicine II.

Bruce Sabath, MDBruce Sabath, MD

Dr. Sabath recently joined Pulmonary Medicine at GBMC. He also serves as an intensivist on GBMC's critical care team. Dr. Sabath earned his medical degree from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and completed his residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital with the Osler Internal Medicine Residency Program. He went on to complete a fellowship in pulmonary and critical care at Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sabath was previously employed as a faculty member of GBMC's Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Rex Yung, MDRex Yung, MD

Dr. Yung, MD, FCCP, comes to Pulmonary Medicine at GBMC from The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he retired from his roles as Director of Pulmonary Oncology and Director of Bronchology. He also serves as an intensivist on GBMC’s critical care team. Dr. Yung earned his doctoral degree from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), where he also completed his residency. Dr. Yung’s fellowship in pulmonary and critical care medicine was held at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF). He has spent much of his career teaching and specializing in pulmonary medicine.

Sahayini Arulrajah, MDSahayini Arulrajah, MD

Sahayini Arulrajah, MD, has joined GBMC’s Department of Medicine Faculty. Dr. Arulrajah earned her medical degree from the University of Kelaniya in Sri Lanka and completed a year of post-graduate training in clinical oncology at the National Cancer Institute, Maharagama in Sri Lanka. She also completed a research fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. Dr. Arulrajah served as a resident at GBMC, including a year as Chief Resident of Internal Medicine. She was previously employed as a Primary Care Physician at MedStar Medical Group in Dundalk.
