Lymphedema is the chronic and progressive swelling of a body part caused by malformation or damage to the lymphatic system. It most often affects an arm or leg, but can also occur in the face, neck, abdomen or other parts of the body.
If you have undergone surgery, radiation, had any type of trauma to the lymph nodes/lymphatic system or if you have experienced these symptoms since birth or around age 35, you may have lymphedema:
- persistent swelling
- a feeling of "heaviness" in a body part
- tightening of the skin
- hardening of a limb
- decreased flexibility and function
Failure to obtain treatment can lead to several serious and progressive medical problems including:
- Repeated episodes of life-threatening infections such as cellulitus
- Frequent hospitalization
- Compromised quality of life
- Discomfort
- Depression
- Limited function
- Relentless medical care and expenses
