Neal Friedlander, M.D. Named Chairman of Medicine
at Greater Baltimore Medical Center

Baltimore Native Brings Non-Traditional Background To Chairman’s Position

BALTIMORE – April 21, 2006 –  Neal M. Friedlander, M.D., F.A.C.P., a Baltimore internist for more than 20 years, has been appointed Chairman of Medicine at Greater Baltimore Medical Center.  Dr. Friedlander has been a member of GBMC’s medical staff since 1998.

“One of my major focus areas will be bringing specialists and primary care physicians together so that the medical community can better understand how to meet the needs of our patients now and in the future,” said Dr. Friedlander.  “What has made the practice of medicine so challenging over the past two decades is incorporating the latest in technology and scientific advances into the day-to-day care of patients while taking into account the changes that occur in each person’s life.”

Dr. Friedlander’s responsibilities as chairman will include addressing patient safety and quality of care and supervising the hospital’s Internal Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Friedlander brings a non-traditional background to his tenure as chairman of medicine.  After earning an undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania and a law degree from the Harvard Law School, he was an attorney in private practice with Piper & Marbury in the mid 1970s.  Deciding to change career paths, he graduated from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and served both his internship and residency at Mercy Medical Center, where he was Chief Resident in Medicine.

Working in private practice prior to joining GBMC’s medical staff, he is a Diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. A member of many civic and community organizations, Dr. Friedlander serves on the Board of Trustees of the Maryland Institute College of Art.  Dr. Friedlander and his wife, Virginia K. Adams, live in Baltimore's Bolton Hill neighborhood and collect contemporary art.

Dr. Friedlander, who started marathon running about five years ago at age 55 and has completed races in Baltimore, Philadelphia, and overseas in Dublin and Venice, has his eyes set on another goal -- completing a marathon in four hours.
