GBMC Names Owings Mills Resident
New Chairman of Gynecology

BALTIMORE, Md. – June 2, 2006 – A physician on staff for 23 years at Greater  Baltimore Medical Center has been appointed as the hospital’s new Chairman of Gynecology.  Francis C. (Bing) Grumbine, M.D., who was selected after a national search, brings a wealth of experience in gynecologic oncology and minimally invasive surgical treatment to his new position.

A resident of Owings Mills, Dr. Grumbine is board certified in obstetrics/gynecology and gynecologic oncology.  He has been a member of GBMC’s medical staff since 1982 and also serves as  head of the Division of Gynecological Oncology.

Dr. Grumbine has professional interests in groundbreaking research and clinical trials, and is specifically interested in caring for patients through surgical interventions and cancer treatments. “I really enjoy taking care of complicated patients, performing radical surgery, administering chemotherapy and collaborating with radiation oncologists to help my patients reach a favorable outcome.”

As chairman, Dr. Grumbine plans to further the use of technology and minimally invasive surgical techniques within the Department of Gynecology.  Earlier this year, a GBMC physician was the first doctor at a community hospital in the mid-Atlantic states to perform robot-assisted gynecologic surgery using the da VinciÔ  system when he reconnected a woman’s fallopian tubes. The da VinciÔ  technology is well suited also for procedures such as radical hysterectomy and lymph node resection, said Dr. Grumbine.

Obstetrics and gynecology are cornerstones of the many services provided by GBMC.  “We are fortunate to have a GYN department that is staffed with excellent physicians and subspecialists, including urogynecologists and reproductive specialists,” said Dr. Grumbine.  “I look forward to strengthening our reputation as the leading hospital in the area for gynecology and women’s care.”

Dr. Grumbine earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia and served an internship and residency in obstetrics/gynecology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he also completed his fellowship training in gynecologic oncology.  Dr. Grumbine is a member of the OB/GYN Society of Maryland, the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, the American College of OB/GYN, the Gynecologic Oncology Group and the Mid-Atlantic Gyn Oncology Society.  He was also very involved in developing the joint F.J. Montz Fellowship in GYN Oncology at Johns Hopkins Hospital and GBMC. This integrated program will graduate its first fellow this summer and accepts one new fellow per year.
