GBMC Team Honored With National Award

For Care of Patients With Congenital Facial Anomalies

BALTIMORE, Md. –  June 29, 2007 –   A team of Greater Baltimore Medical Center clinicians has received national recognition from the American Medical Association for their work with individuals affected with congenital facial anomalies. Randolph B. Capone, M.D., FACS, a board certified facial plastic surgeon who founded and co-directs the Greater Baltimore Cleft Lip & Palate Team, was awarded the 2007 Young Physician Community Service Award at the annual AMA meeting this month.

Dr. Capone, who also serves as director of The Baltimore Center for Facial Plastic Surgery, accepted the distinguished award on behalf of the multidisciplinary team of experts.

“Congenital facial anomalies are often devastating to families and the children they affect,” said Dr. Capone. “I'm very pleased that our team has been recognized for the good work we do for these kids.” Dr. Capone, serves as the delegate from the American Academy of Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery to the American Medical Association/Young Physician Section.

This marks only the second time a Maryland physician has been recognized with AMA’s Community Service Award.  According to AMA’s website, "Through these awards, the AMA strives not only to recognize and encourage excellence in community service activities carried out by young physicians, but also to stimulate similar efforts by other young doctors.  The community service awards underscore to the community the significant accomplishments attained by young physicians who give of themselves to advance the well-being of others."

Other key GBMC members of the Greater Baltimore Cleft Lip & Palate Team include: co-director Antonie Kline, M.D. (GBMC’s Director of Pediatric Genetics); co-director Patrick Byrne, M.D., (Director of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins); James Kelly, M.D. (GBMC’s Chairman of Otolaryngology); Timothy Doran, M.D. (GBMC’s Chairman of Pediatrics); and John Caccamese, M.D. (a pediatric oromaxillofacial surgeon at the University of Maryland).

“The program has been tremendously successful and has become a model program for cleft care in the private setting,” Dr. Capone said.  “It also is a wonderful example of how academic and private healthcare providers can work together for the greater good of their community.”

The Greater Baltimore Cleft Lip & Palate Team was founded in November 2004 and has helped more than 50 children and their families. The team is comprised of providers from pediatrics, facial plastic surgery, oral surgery, otolaryngology, ophthalmology, anesthesiology, neonatology, genetics, dentistry, audiology, speech pathology, social work, nursing, and nutrition.  Its mission is to provide expert care to families affected by congenital facial deformities within 24 hours of delivery.  Clinical information about facial deformities, complementary specialty feeding equipment, counseling, bimonthly team meetings, and hearing tests are offered to every family.  The team only operates with donated funds or insurance reimbursements, and special arrangements are made for uninsured families.
