GBMC Sponsors Training Course For Sexual Assault Examiner Nurses
BALTIMORE, Md. – September 27, 2007 – Greater Baltimore Medical Center is sponsoring a Forensic Nurse Examiner – Adult training course October 29 – November 2, 8 a.m.-6 p.m. daily, for registered nurses licensed (RNs) in Maryland with at least 18 months continuous clinical experience. GBMC is the only Baltimore County hospital certified to perform forensic examinations on sexual assault victims over age 13.
The course will fulfill the didactic portion of training necessary to become a forensic nurse examiner – adult (FNE-A) in Maryland, which would enable the nurse to work in a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner (SAFE) unit. The course is approved by the Maryland Board of Nursing. Cost is $350 including texts.
Among the speakers will be Laura Neuman, who was a victim of rape when she was 18 years old and worked diligently to see her attacker brought to justice nearly two decades later. Neuman founded the Laura Neuman Foundation (www.lauraneuman.org), which educates and empowers victims of rape and sexual assault to act as their own advocates to get their cases resolved.
The course includes presentations from various agencies, including the Baltimore County State's Attorney, Baltimore County Police Department Special Victims' Unit and Crime Lab, and the Maryland Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Suzanne Brown, MSN, RN, SANE-A, from Inova Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., is the lead instructor.
