GBMC Names Pikesville Resident New Chairman of Emergency Medicine
BALTIMORE, Md. – November 6, 2007 – Jeffrey P. Sternlicht, MD, FACEP, of Pikesville, has been named chairman of emergency medicine at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Dr. Sternlicht, an emergency medicine physician at GBMC since July 1998, also is the hospital’s primary disaster physician and served as clinical director of emergency medicine prior to his promotion.
“We have top notch physicians and nurses as well as many cutting edge ancillary resources at GBMC,” Dr. Sternlicht said. “I look forward to the challenging role as chairman because I enjoy the satisfaction of helping improve systems and steadily raising the bar of excellent healthcare delivery. My ultimate goal is efficient and high quality emergency services within a safe and compassionate environment.”
Dr. Sternlicht also serves as medical director for many area horse racing events, such as the Grand National Steeplechase, Maryland Hunt Cup, and Shawan Downs Steeplechase, and for the Special Events Mobile Medical Team, a private company providing medical services to various events across the region.
Board certified in emergency medicine, Dr. Sternlicht completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in emergency medicine from Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Va.; earned his medical degree with a distinction in research from the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center School of Medicine in Brooklyn, N.Y.; and earned a bachelor’s degree in economics, cum laude, from the State University of New York at Albany.
At GBMC, Dr. Sternlicht serves on the Critical Incident Committee, Emergency Department Management Committee, and Emergency Department Operations Committee, and is a certified hazardous materials technician. He is a member of the Baltimore County Emergency Preparedness Committee, the American College of Emergency Physicians and the Maryland College of Emergency Physicians, and is a graduate of the Healthcare Leadership Course offered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
About GBMC’s Emergency Department
GBMC’s Emergency Department (ED) features separate adult and pediatric treatment areas and an Urgent Care Center, all staffed by board certified emergency physicians. With 43 patient care rooms, the ED will care for more than 60,000 adult and pediatric patients in 2007. The Pediatrics ED combines urgent, emergency care, observation and inpatient care services. Pediatric nurses and physicians follow children along their path of care, and a board-certified pediatrician is on-site around-the-clock. Designed with a patient and family-focused care environment, patients in the ED are first evaluated by a QuickLook nurse, who initially assesses the patient upon their arrival. Private examination rooms feature televisions, telephones and bedside computers for patient registration and improved medical care. The ED also houses the Sexual Assault Forensic Examination unit, which handles all reported sexual assaults of victims over age 13 in Baltimore County.
