“Classic, traditional names appear to still be popular, at least at GBMC,” said Lori Kantziper, RNC, clinical partner for the Postpartum Unit and a nurse specializing in care for new mothers and infants for 10 years.

While it was most popular among GBMC parents in 2007, Madison was the fourth most popular name for girls born nationwide in 2007, according to BabyCenter.com.  Six other popular GBMC baby girl’s names were also popular across the country, according to the list. (Sophia #1, Isabella #2, Emma #3, Ava #5, Emily #8, Olivia #10)  Ethan was the fifth-most popular name chosen for GBMC boy babies, while it ranks second on the BabyCenter.com list.  Other popular boy’s names from GBMC ranking nationwide are Noah #6, Jack #8, and Matthew #10. The top five most popular names for baby girls born in 2006 in Maryland – Madison, Emily, Abigail, Emma, and Ava (according to the Social Security Administration: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/OACT/babynames/state/top5_2006.html) - all rank as among the most popular at GBMC for 2007.  For boys, four of the top five most popular names statewide in 2006 – Joshua, Michael, William, Matthew – rank among GBMC’s most popular in 2007.

Most parents do have names picked out in advance.  They may have a few names, but want to see what the baby looks like before they decide which name to choose,” Kantziper said. “Sometimes the siblings get to pick the name, and Jewish families often name in honor of (Sephardic) or in memory of (Ashkenazi).”

“I have often helped with debates on how to spell the name and I do get asked what my children’s names are,” she added, noting it’s also common for the father to choose the name (especially if it's a boy and a "junior") and the mother will often then choose the name for their second child. “And I once had a patient who said she always loved the name Bailey but someone in the family had a dog with that name so she couldn't use it.”

This marks the first time GBMC has officially tallied and reported the most popular names for babies.
