History of The Richard E. Hoover Rehabilitation Services for Low Vision & Blindness
The Richard E. Hoover Rehabilitation Services for Low Vision & Blindness (Hoover Rehabilitation Services) is a non-profit organization, which provides comprehensive low vision rehabilitation services. The Hoover Services team includes Ophthalmologists, rehabilitation teachers/certified low vision therapists, and orientation and mobility instructors. This team works together to increase the independence and improve the quality of life of our patients.
In 1986, The Richard E. Hoover Rehabilitation Services for Low Vision & Blindness was established at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center as a joint venture of GBMC, whose Ophthalmology Department was headed by Dr. Hoover for 25 years, and the Maryland School for the Blind, where Dr. Hoover had a long history of service as a teacher, ophthalmologist, and board member. Dr. Hoover dedicated much of his career to developing rehabilitation programs for visually impaired people. These services, which bear his name, continue this mission of teaching people the skills they need to function each day despite impaired sight.
