For people affected by low vision-the loss of vision that cannot be corrected by the use of eye glasses, contact lenses, or corrected by conventional surgical methods - performing simple tasks like reading the newspaper of taking a walk can be difficult to near impossible. Low vision can range from being affected by limited eyesight to being legally blind with some of its causes being eye injury, certain diseases and heredity. According to the American Foundation for the Blind, age-related vision loss and blindness affects on in six-or 4.9 million Americans age 65 and older. Luckily for seniors in the Baltimore region, there is The Richard E. Hoover Rehabilitation Services for Low Vision & Blindness (Hoover Rehabilitation Services) at GBMC, one of only a few low vision practitioners in the Baltimore area. 95 percent of its patients are seniors and practitioners in the center seem, on average, 400-500+ patients a year at its low vision clinic at GBMC as well as in the four satellite offices throughout the state. Low vision does not have to be a disability anymore thanks to the multitude of aids and low vision devices that assist people with simple tasks of daily living. Hoover Low Vision Services also has the only low vision device demonstration center in the country open to the public where almost every conceivable electronic magnifier commercially available is on display. |
