SINUS CT SCAN
Your doctor has requested that you undergo a test in the CT SCAN department called a Sinus CT Scan. The information gained from this examination will be important in the diagnosis and treatment of the medical condition that you may have.
What Is A CT Scan ?
The word CT is an abbreviation for the words Computed Tomography, and the word Tomography is a combination of two words: tomo - to cut; and graphy - pictures - as in photography. So this study or scan is a series of pictures in thin sections put together with the assistance of a very sophisticated computer.
Is There Any Preparation For The Sinus CT Scan?
NO. The Sinus CT Scan is done without the use of any type of contrast. You will not need to have an injection or consume any oral contrast material.
How Long Will My Test Take? What Will The Test Be Like?
The Scan will take approximately 30 minutes. During that time, the technologist usually takes 2 different types of images. The first set of images will be taken with you laying on your stomach, and the second set will be taken with you laying on your back. The first part of the test is probably the least comfortable for you since you will be on your stomach for approximately 10 to 12 minutes. This, however, is the most important part of the test since it shows the Radiologist and your doctor the make-up, structure, and anatomy of your sinuses. Also, IF you should need to have sinus surgery, these pictures give the surgeon a true to life map of your sinuses. Since we are all built a little differently these images let the surgeon know what to expect and what to look for when he corrects your sinus problem. The second set of images is taken with you laying on your back and also takes between 10 and 12 minutes. After these images are completed you will be free to go.
What If I Can't Lay On My Stomach?
We find that most of our patient's are able to lay on their stomachs for the short period of the scan. If, however, you are unable to lay in that position, we will take the second set of pictures with you on your back and use the computer to reconstruct the first set as best we can. The computer reconstruction does have limitations so we really need for you to lie on your stomach if at all possible.
Are There Any Restrictions After My Scan?
NO. You can resume your normal activities.
When Will I Get The Results Of My Scan?
The scan will be read by the Radiologist shortly after you leave the department. The results will then be sent to your doctor. This usually takes 2 to 3 days. If you have any special needs (such as an immediate reading report to your physician) please let one of the technologists know and we will be happy to expedite this process for you.
