ENTEROCLYSIS

Why Am I Having This Test?

This study examines in detail your entire small bowel.  Your physician has requested this study.  The results will enable him to chart a course for your care.

Preparation For Test

The patient is to have nothing to eat or drink from midnight on the day of the test.

What Is Involved In The Test?

The Radiologist will insert a nasogastric tube into your nostril.  The tube will pass through your nose and into the stomach.  After the tube is in place the technologist will fill your small bowel by putting barium into the tube.  When your small bowel is filled the tube will be removed. The Radiologist will then take X-rays of your filled small bowel.

Is This Test Painful?

Most patients experience discomfort in the nose and throat as the nasogastric tube is inserted.

How Long Does This Test Take?

Approximately 45 minutes.

When Will I Get The Results?

The Radiologist will read your study the day of the exam.  It will be typed and sent, via the mail, to your physician who will tell you the results.

After The Procedure

You may resume your normal diet.  Unless otherwise told by your physician you should increase your fluids to flush the barium from your system.  A mild laxative may be used.
