GI/SBS (GASTROINTESTINAL/SMALL BOWEL SERIES)

Why Am I Having This Test?

Your doctor has ordered this test to evaluate the function of your stomach and small bowel.

Preparation For This Test

Nothing to eat or drink after midnight prior to the test.

How Is The Study Performed?

You will be given barium to drink and X-rays will be taken.  You may be asked to turn in different positions during the taking of the X-rays.  After the initial taking of X-rays you may receive another cup of barium to drink.  After that an X-ray will be taken every 15 or 30 minutes.  The total amount of barium given during your study will be determined by the Radiologist.

How Long Will This Test Take?

The average length of this test is between one and three hours.  After drinking barium it takes this amount of time (or longer) for the barium to reach your small bowel.

When Can I Eat?

You may resume your regular diet after the exam is completed unless otherwise instructed by your physician.
