Why Am I Having This Test?

Your physician requested this exam after considering your symptoms and diagnosis.  The results of the exam will help him chart a course for your future care.

Preparation For Exam

The patient should not eat or drink anything from the midnight before the exam until the test is complete.

What Does The Test Consist Of?

You will be asked to stand with your back against an X-ray table.  In this position you will be given a cup of barium.  The Radiologist will instruct you as to when to drink and how much.  As you are drinking the radiologist will be taking X-rays of the barium traveling from the esophagus to the stomach.  The X-ray table will move into a reclining position at which time you will be asked to turn in different directions.  You will drink another cup of barium as more X-rays are taken.

Is This Test Painful?

It is not painful.

How Long Is This Study?

This test lasts about 15 minutes.
