SIALOGRAM
Preparation For Test
There is no preparation.
What Is A Sialogram?
It is the examination of the salivary glands of the mouth using an injection of X-ray contrast (colorless dye).
How Long Will The Exam Take?
Approximately one hour.
Is It Going To Hurt?
There may be pressure in the ear area during the injection.
How Is The Test Done?
There is a small opening inside your mouth, in your cheek, and under your tongue that leads to your salivary duct (canal), which leads to your gland. A small blunt end wire, which is called a probe, is inserted into this duct, by the radiologist. This will open the duct and make it easy for the dye to be injected into the gland. After the probe is removed a small cannula tube is placed in the duct and the dye is injected. X-rays will then be taken. After the Radiologist reviews these X-rays the technologist will give you lemon juice to swish the affected side. This will remove any remaining dye left in the gland or duct.
Will There Be Any After Effects?
You may have slight swelling in the affected area which should last no longer than a few days.
After The Procedure
Proceed as you would normally unless otherwise directed by your Physician.
