Patient Information Booklet
Your Doctor has recommended that you have a test in the Nuclear Medicine Department. The information gained from such a test will be important in the diagnosis and treatment of any medical problem you may have.
Nuclear Medicine scans provide information about both the anatomy and function of organs in the body.
You will receive a small amount of radioactive material which will be given by an injection in a vein in your arm (similar to having blood drawn) or by swallowing a pill. Each test uses a specific radioactive material depending on which organ system or part of your body that is being studied.
You may be asked to wait a while before the scan begins. This time will vary depending on the type of scan. Some will be done immediately, while others may not take place for hours or even days.
When it is time for your scan, you will be positioned next to a special camera which will visualize your body and organs. The camera does not produce any radiation. The only radiation exposure that you will receive comes from the small injection or pill.
