ABDOMINAL SONOGRAM
Your doctor has recommended that you undergo a test in our Ultrasound department called an abdominal sonogram.
What Is An Abdominal Sonogram?
An abdominal sonogram evaluates the gallbladder, common bile duct, liver, spleen, pancreas, kidneys, and large arteries of the abdomen for abnormalities. Ultrasound, also known as sonography, is a diagnostic study used to examine internal structures of the body. It uses sound waves, much like those used in Navy sonar. No radiation is involved. These high frequency sound waves have been used to assess the progress of fetal development, to evaluate internal organs, and to evaluate circulation of blood vessels. The use of diagnostic ultrasound is painless, easy, and has no lasting effects.
Is There Any Preparation For This Exam?
Yes. You may have nothing to eat or drink after the midnight prior to your appointment time.
Will The Exam Hurt?
No. This procedure consists of application of a warm gel to your abdomen and placing a transducer probe on different areas to evaluate organs in your abdominal area for any type of abnormalities. You can resume your normal diet upon completion of your exam.
Are There Any Side Effects From This Exam?
No. There are no known biological effects from diagnostic ultrasound.
When Will I Get The Results Of My Exam?
After your procedure is completed a radiologist will review your sonogram and dictate a report to your doctor which will be mailed the next day. In some instances if an immediate report is required, the radiologist will call your doctor and talk to him/her personally. Your doctor will then advise you what further steps need to be taken.
