BREAST SONOGRAM

Your doctor has recommended that you have a test in our Ultrasound department called a breast sonogram.

What Is A Breast Sonogram?

Ultrasound, also known as sonography, is a diagnostic study used to examine internal structures of the body.  It uses sound waves, much like those used in Navy sonar.  No radiation is involved.  These high frequency sound waves have been used to assess the progress of fetal development, to evaluate internal organs, and to evaluate circulation of blood vessels.  The use of diagnostic ultrasound is painless, easy, and has no lasting effects. A breast sonogram uses sound to determine differences in the tissue texture of the breast.  It is able to determine the difference between a solid and a fluid filled structure.  It is used when a mammogram has demonstrated a lump or texture change in your breast so that your normal breast tissue or a true lump may be identified.

Is There Any Preparation For This Exam?

No.

Will This Exam Hurt?

No. This procedure consists of the application of gel on the breast and placing a transducer probe in different areas to evaluate for the breast tissue.

What Is The Difference Between A Mammogram And Breast Sonogram?

A mammogram is a type of imaging which uses radiation, just like a plain X-ray.  A sonogram is a type of imaging which uses high frequency sound waves.  Often a sonogram is performed after mammography to compare breast tissue textures.

How Long Is This Exam?

Once your procedure has started it should be completed within one hour.

When Will I Know The Results Of My Exam?

Once your procedure has been completed a radiologist will review your pictures and compare the pictures with your mammogram, if you had one.  The radiologist will dictate a report which will be typed and mailed out the same day.  Your physician will receive this report in the mail within a day or two of your test.
