CAROTID DOPPLER

Your doctor has recommended that you undergo a test in our Ultrasound department called a Carotid Doppler.

What Is A Carotid Doppler?

Ultrasound, also known as sonography, is a diagnostic study used to examine internal structures of the body.  It uses sound waves, much like those used in Navy sonar.  No radiation is involved.  These high frequency sound waves have been used to assess the progress of fetal development, to evaluate internal organs, and to evaluate circulation of blood vessels.  The use of diagnostic ultrasound is painless, easy, and has no lasting effects.  A Carotid Doppler ultrasound evaluates the blood flow in the Carotid artery on both sides of the neck.  The Carotid artery supplies blood mainly to the brain, but also to the face, scalp, and eyes.

Is There Any Preparation For This Exam?

No. This exam consists of the application of warm gel on your neck and placing a transducer probe in different areas of your neck to evaluate the blood flow in the Carotid arteries.

How Long Will This Exam Last?

Once your procedure has started it should be completed within one hour.

When Will My Doctor Get The Results Of My Exam?

Once your procedure has been completed, either a radiologist or a vascular surgeon will interpret the exam and a report will be dictated and sent to your physician the following day.
