ECHOCARDIOGRAM
Your doctor has recommended that your undergo a test in our Ultrasound department called an echocardiogram.
What Is An Echocardiogram?
Ultrasound, also known as sonography, is a diagnostic study used to examine internal structures of the body. It uses sound waves, much like those used in Navy sonar. No radiation is involved. These high frequency sound waves have been used to assess the progress of fetal development, to evaluate internal organs, and to evaluate circulation of blood vessels. The use of diagnostic ultrasound is painless, easy, and has no lasting effects. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound study of your heart muscle, chamber size and valves. In addition to seeing the anatomic structures, we are able to assess blood flow (across) through the valves to determine how well the heart works as well as how well the valves work.
