RENAL SONOGRAM
Your doctor has recommended that you undergo a test in our Ultrasound department called a renal (kidney) sonogram.
What Is A Renal Sonogram?
Ultrasound, also known as sonography, is a diagnostic study used to examine internal structures of the body. It uses sound waves, much like those used in Navy sonar. No radiation is involved. These high frequency sound waves have been used to assess the progress of fetal development, to evaluate internal organs, and to evaluate circulation of blood vessels. The use of diagnostic ultrasound is painless, easy, and has no lasting effects. A renal sonogram uses ultrasound to image your kidneys. We are able to determine size, texture, and whether an obstruction of your urinary tract has occurred.
Is There Is Any Preparation For This Exam?
No.
Will This Exam Hurt?
No. This exam consists of putting warm gel on your upper abdomen and placing a transducer probe on different areas to evaluate your kidneys for any abnormalities.
How Long Will This Exam Last?
Once your procedure has started it should be completed within one hour.
Will I Be Told Of The Results?
No. A radiologist will review your pictures and dictate a report. Your results will then be mailed to your physician the following day. If the radiologist feels there is a problem we will contact your doctor who will advise you what further steps need to be taken.
