Neurosciences at GBMC: The Stroke Service
The Stroke Service at GBMC is a unique inpatient service dedicated to those patients who have had a Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) or Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA). Neurologists and a Stroke Nurse oversee the daily care of the stroke patients. These specially trained clinicians meet with a multidisciplinary team twice weekly to ensure that the individual needs of each patient are met.
Patients admitted to the Stroke Service can expect:
- Oversight of care by experienced neuroscience clinicians
- Continuity of care
- Patient-centered holistic care
- Expedition of relevant tests
- Appropriate discharge planning
- Medical care review
Care providers include:
- A team of neurologists:
>Dr. Allan Genut, Medical Director of Stroke Services, oversees the program.
>Drs. Howard Moses, Todd Samuels and Jim Wolf provide on-call coverage. - A Stroke Program Manager (Certified Neurological Registered Nurse) who coordinates the communication and process of the interdisciplinary team.
- A Neurosciences Nurse Educator
- Specialists from several disciplines including Physical and Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Pathology, Dietary, and Care Management.
- Nurses involved in direct patient care have additional annual stroke education and attend the multidisciplinary rounds, which offer weekly education.
The primary target population for the Stroke Service may have any combination of the following characteristics:
- Lateralizing symptoms such as facial droop, hemiparesis, and numbness
- Language symptoms including aphasias and dysarthria
- Cerebellar symptoms such as vertigo and ataxia.
